reFRESH (November/December 2007) made a huge mistake, but only one—their cover features the hot Joseph Sayers (it's a fast-becoming-iconic image included in the book Men For Men: Homoeroticism And Male Homosexuality In The History Of Photography 1840-2006 by Pierre Borhan) but it should have been Cheyenne Jackson front and center. He's hot, he's on Broadway and he's openly gay—even if he isn't wild about the phrase.
I've said so many negative things about Xanadu that I'm afraid Cheyenne and I could never be together (for that reason only...), but in my defense I didn't see it when he had joined the cast. I still can't imagine going back, even for Cheyenne's back, but I thought twice about it as I flipped through reFRESH. A fun interview by Andrew Holland is illustrated with sizzling photography by Troy Phillips that shows the openly gay Broadway star in various stages of dress and undress that playfully reveal what makes him sexy, from his grin to his unbelievable legs to his overall form. Money quote is about his Xanadu costume:
"Satin shorts! This isn't false modesty here but I have huge giant legs and a huge butt and these shorts are basically screaming, 'look at my butt!'"
These boxers are basically screaming, "Look at my dick!"
Sigh...Xanadu me!
But beyond the silly fanboyishness of it all, Jackson has more to talk about than his winning pins and amazing ass:
"I definitely don't believe in outing people. Being gay is important but I think there's less focus on sexuality and more on work. I don't really think it's anybody's business; people's lives are their own. If it's looked upon as some sort of taboo subject that's only going to fuel the tabloids..."
There's a mixed message in there, in that he does acknowledge the significance of being gay and disdains tabloidizing and therefore stigmatizing it, but he still seems to be firmly against outing. Further on the subject:
"I get tons of mail from young people, and it can be a lot to handle. I got this letter from a fourteen-year-old kid who asked for a signed photograph, which I sorted out. And it turned out that he came out to his parents, holding the picture of me because it gave him strength. That's pretty full on."
He's pretty full on, too.
Also of interest is a spread on Dave Moretti of Dante's Cove fame...okay, I haven't watched it either. But when people say it's the pits, they haven't seen Dave's:
Finally, just in time for Christmas, reFRESH offers a new take on the 12 Days, with provocative photography by Andrew Bainbridge:
Now those were the days.

It's typical of gay magazines to have straight people on the cover. Why can't gay people get on the cover of a gay magazine? Do bigots run these magazines?
