I'm heartened by the fact that John McCain gave a terrible, dry, uninspired speech last night, one that was widely criticized. And by widely criticized, I don't mean just in the big, bad, evil liberal media, but by some people who ought to be on board the Straight Talk Express by now, like Washington Post columnist/Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson.
Hilariously, "passed over" veep possibility Tom Ridge could not help calling John McCain by the wrong name. This should go viral:
John McCain's speech will almost certainly wind up having far fewer viewers than Barack Obama's or his veep Sarah Palin's. I would assume more people are interested in seeing him than Joe Biden, but we'll see.
This more than anything shows that Sarah Palin has become the candidate—he knew he was never going to be up to competing with Obama in the home stretch, so he recruited a telegenic partner to do the heavy (smearing Obama) and even the fairly light (speaking, smiling, joking) lifting. He has officially been outshone by his own running mate, a meme I hope will take hold in the media. He's disgusting because all he cares about, at 72, is at least winning the presidency. Forget about Straight Talk, can anyone tell me with a Straight Face that this tired geezer will be around in four years?
Regardless,
it's pathetic, America, that this man has made it this far and that his fortunes are still so good, that he is within 60 days of potentially becoming president. The polls should be 75/25, but instead, Obama has an anything-but-comfy lead (or is tied, if you believe
CBS's latest—which shows an eight-point swing that doesn't factor in a smaller number of Democrats and Independents in their polling sample.)
McCain has no energy, no credibility whatsoever for his message of being a maverick and now he's blatantly stealing Obama's message of change. For which I'm sure he will be mocked.
I'm not bragging, but I hope I will inspire others to do what they can—I had not yet contributed any money to Hillary Clinton or to Barack Obama, which is ridiculous, so
I made up for it by donating the maximum allowable amount last night, $2,300, to Obama. I can live without that money (but believe me, I can't exactly "afford" it and will regret it when I'm John McCain's age and wishing I had the cash to bribe my nurse to let me go outside and get some g.d. sunshine for a fuckin' change, dammit), but
I can't live with the idea of not giving till it hurt, not when the team of McCain/Palin are in play. And hey, now
I can honestly say I'm as big a donor to Barack as Barbra Streisand! How uppity am I???
Papa can you hear me? Will McCain be alive in 4 years?? Probably...it seems like the most miserable people seem to live forever...to quote Patsy from Ab Fab when her mother was old and complaining ..."Would you just DIE"!
