Listening again, it's not bad. Very sweet. But it's not her best.
How painful it is to read this list of Madonna's best-selling singles in the UK! Some of it makes sense,
but to think that "American Pie" is #16 ahead of classics like "Borderline," "Ray Of Light" and "Dress You Up"...and while I loved the songs and am glad to see them in the Top 10, how weird is it that "Beautiful Stranger" and "Frozen" ranked so high? I'm shocked that 1986's "Live To Tell" is only #22 while that same year's much, much less interesting tune "True Blue" is all the way up at #6..."True Blue" (hyper-cheesy European video co-starring Debi Mazar below) somehow managed to be slightly more popular than the ubiquitous "Hung Up." But these are "official" figures, so who knows which are up-to-date and which were never calculated correctly to begin with. There's nothing like a list to set me off.
UPDATE: With thanks to Peter, here is a full list of the exact sales of all Madonna's 64 UK Top 20 hits (somehow, only the beautiful "Miles Away" failed to hit in that way...and that includes very offbeat releases such as "Love Profusion" and "One More Chance").
The eyebrows did this video for scale wages.

I'm just glad to see that Madonna has been so successful in the UK (well, until 'Miles Away' failed to break the top 10, thanks to Warner's lack of promotion and no video to accompany the shoddy release strategy). I really, REALLY hope that Live Nation does a better job at timely releases on Madonna singles in the future.
But yeah, some of these top selling singles make you scratch your head. There are MUCH better songs than these and they didn't even appear on the list?
Funny enough 'American Pie' was a hit around the world for M, bigger than most of her latest releases combined- topped more charts than 'Sorry', 'Give it to me', and even '4 minutes' I think. I guess it comes down to the fact that people outside the US didn't have much reverence for the original version to begin with.
While I knew "Into the Groove" got a proper release there I had no idea it was her biggest. (Those Brits have good taste, indeed!) I wonder if her label regrets the way they handled it in America. I guess she wasn't exactly not tearing up the U.S. charts without it here, though.
(BTW: I'm a huge Don McLean fan and always enjoyed her "American Pie" ...)

How funny - I just did a post on "American Pie" over on my blog the other day too! Great minds think alike.

Yes, the skin is great but I actually loved her mink eyebrows.
