According to Globe (August 31, 2009), the reason Oprah's weight has "exploded" is that she's desperately afraid of Kitty Kelley's upcoming book about her, which she fears will say she's been hiding a sexual relationship with Gayle King all these years. Apparently, Oprah's fans will hold this kind of omission against her and it will "forever change the way Oprah's fans view her" if they read it in a book by Kitty Kelley as opposed to observing Goprah's behavior for themselves.
I can't imagine Oprah cares about this book, even though I don't believe her when she (repeatedly) says she isn't a lesbian.
Poor Oprah, I just hope she has enough money to retire.
