Not the usual type to drool over the Second Amendment
Denny's is pleasing right-wingers with its humorous ad which asks what makes America great. How? By having one of the diners firmly declaring the Second Amendment—the right to bear arms—as her choice.
It's pretty pathetic to consider the right to bear arms as the very first thing you'd cite as what makes our country great, but that's why it's right up the alley of conservatives. Considering the racist past of the chain, it's not surprising that one commenter feared some "Obama-lovin'" liberals would boycott Denny's. (Fifty years ago, it wasn't "Obama" that liberals were accused of lovin'.)
But these right-wing goofs don't seem to have noticed that the "right to bear arms" portion has been cropped out on occasion. I've seen the full and the cropped ad here in NYC, so I am guessing it's tailored to individual programs, but might also be edited in certain markets where people would not list guns as the #1 thing that makes the U.S.A. great.
I wouldn't be caught dead eating at Denny's anyway, so no boycott from this household. I gained enough weight scarfing down strawberry poundcake desserts there in the late '80s when a friend was conning me into going nightly (!) to buy them for us.
