He's a handsome devil—but still a devil

It is looking increasingly likely that Mitt Romney—when he announces his veep pick tomorrow morning in the swing state of Virginia—will be saying the name "Paul Ryan." You know, the congressman with the horrendous budget, hatred of social programs and who makes all his staffers read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

Anyway, if it's NOT Ryan, I agree with this piece that the Romney campaign is making a huge blunder by not doing anything to dissuade conservatives that it is. He's a darling of the "I don't care if you die, you're on your own" right, so having him seem likely and then get the hook at the last minute will just piss them off—and they're already so very unhappy with Mr. Romney.

To pick Ryan, Romney must really be scared he has not gotten his base to coalesce around him. I had been thinking he'd go with a woman in order to try to win back SOME of those, though could only think of someone like Susana Martinez as a likely possibility. Or Kelly Ayotte?

Or maybe it's a fake-out and it'll be Bob McDonnell to help win Romney Virginia?

We'll know tomorrow morning.
