BOY CULTURE REVIEW: **-1/2 OUT OF ****
Just saw the loopy Jaws: The Musical, a 40-minute spoof on the ultimate maneater, at The Broadway Comedy Club on W. 53rd. It was the final performance, so unfortunately anything I say can't be used by you as a guide for seeing or skipping it.
But I thought for what it was, it had some good laughs. Featuring a plot wherein Jaws falls in love with a young vacationer so eats her (gay) boyfriend ("there's no correlation between flamboyant and buoyant") to get him out of the way, the musical benefits greatly from the pure voice of Laura Daniel and the over-the-top vocal and comedy stylings of Brett Douglas. When playing a screamer, he actually screams! And to great effect.
Short and silly, Jaws: The Musical was a fun diversion even if it's too slight to amount to much and works more as a showcase for the talent involved. If faced with the opportunity to see it sometime, you shouldn't fear treading in.
The funniest part of all was leaving right after and seeing the hard-working cast stripping down in a makeshift dressing room just off the entrance. Nice chest, Jaws! (John Flynn)
