U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, 52, has been killed at the consulate after a wave of violence swept the region in response to wingnut Terry Jones's film depicting Mohammad as a homosexual pedophile and liar. He is the first ambassador killed in the line of duty in more than 30 years.
The new president of Libya has apologized, and our own president has deplored the "senseless violence." Would-be president Mitt Romney seized the opportunity to play politics, claiming President Obama was "apologizing for free speech." He is being roundly criticized for his absurd and dangerous opportunism. And not just by Democrats.
Free speech is not always free. Islam's most fanatical followers are living in another millennium and their actions can't be condoned or excused in any way; the people responsible for this act are savages. But I wonder if Terry Jones is satisfied that his pointless provocation has directly led to a wave of violence and death.
