
I spent my Saturday sitting still working, then sitting still watching Jane Fonda's Broadway comeback in 33 Variations, then siting still at a rib joint ingesting food and finally lying prone in bed after 6PM with only one waking hour before konking out asleep. I barely needed a heartbeat. I think I was catching up on my sleep since my boy dog likes to wake up at 6AM, give or take (or take)
33 Variations was not as good as I'd expected.

Thankfully, the Tonys were not a Drama Desk repeat—when the aggressively lousy 9 to 5 somehow broke a record for Drama Desk nominations, it was a Pia Zadora/Golden Globe moment for me. I can
even forgive Tony for recognizing Rock of Ages, which I've heard is a good time but come the fuck on, it's an '80s rock review a la We Will Rock You and probably about as "good" as Mamma Mia.
Full Tony nominations after the jump, but I'm so glad to see that Billy Elliot cleaned up. I'm seeing 33 Variations on Saturday and Next To Normal on Sunday, so that will catch me up on the most praised shows of the season. Maybe I need to quit my constant bitching about how bad Broadway is and how it deserves to fail when it's so lowbrow and instead just patronize shows that are, you know, supposed to be good?
