In Fashion

Artist Roberto Gonzales Fernandez and photographer Camilla Akrans collaborated on "Imagery Inspired By Works Of Art Shown Together To Find A Context In Which Fashion Tells A True Story," from Man About Town (spring-summer 2008):

Me & My Gallic

Sc00028781_2

The latest Attitude I've got is March 2008...decades in gay pop-culture months. It was worth the wait thanks to French actor Arthur DuPont, star of the erotic thriller One Two Another. His experience kissing another man was no big whoop:

"It was just kissing another guy—I didn't have any difficulty with it at all. The other actor was a friend—for a week before filming we had all lived in a house together. We were looking into each other's eyes and because we were already friends we kept seeing the funny side of the situation—that we were naked on the bed together and had to look at each other as if we were in love. We had to get a lot of laughter out of the way first before we could get to the kissing!"

Sc000292f3Arthur, he does as he pleases.

Also eye-catching, these works by Dean Sameshima, an artist known for memorializing gay sexual exploits and obsessions. Yes, they're just giant silk screens of 1950s beefcake shots in pink. But still cool:

"One size does not fit all..."

With thanks to Peter...which is probably what this product might be programmed to say as you put it to use:

Sjp_sexdoll"I don't even know how those worms got there..."

Yes, it's a sex doll. I don't know..."sex in her shitty?" That's quite a stretch...linguistically. Most backdoor bandits don't want to be reminded of the primary use of that portal. Sarah Jessica probably prefers sex in the kitty, but I guess this is funny, and it undoes some of the damage from her "unsexiest woman alive" rap.

Remember the Sex & the City episode that tried to convince us that these four sluts had very little experience with anal sex? That's when it jumped the shark for me. That and the one where the same four sluts acted all icked out about uncut men, as if they would have a chance in hell not encountering a foreskin every other sex act in New York City.

For me, Sarah Jessica Parker will always be from Square Pegs. And now, from this fuck-doll.

M&M

Sc0005eea6

From Têtu (Mars 2008), a previously unpublished Polaroid of Madonna with her stylist at the time, supertalent Maripol (she's on the far right). This was part of a massive Keith Haring spread that reminded me of how much I admired his work at the time—and wished I'd been old enough to have been involved with that scene while at the same time feeling grateful I'd missed it with all its dangers.

Lobby Hobby

Sc0001d07c_2Faye, way back in the day.

I haven't bought an American Photo (March/April 2008) since back in the early '90s, when they still had fabulously decadent Madonna covers, but I like their Tribute To Photography & The Movies quite a bit. Aside from the iconic Faye Dunaway image (remember her face?), there's a great piece on movie lobby cards by film critic Dave Kehr. In it, he discusses the origins of the cards, the technicalities of their manufacture and their value these days (some are $10, some, like one Dracula card, are $65,725).

Sc0001de2bLobby cards were not always subtle.

I love lobby cards! They rarely make them anymore, though I have some for Desperately Seeking Susan and some foreign ones for Evita (not on heavy board, though). More unique, we own a fun Aventurera card (see this movie if you can) and I have an absolutely pristine set from the Joan Crawford film Untamed that I hope to display effectively one day.

AvstfOne of our favorite old movies.

Lobby cards and movie posters started out as all about selling the film, acquired a lot of artistry and seem to have reverted to the former over time. It's a shame, because movie posters can be more than just carnival barkers—they can be lasting works of art.

The Deal Of The Art

Sc00043e6eAt times I feel I'm the least business-minded person, and at other times I find all aspects of business fascinating. So I read Condé Nast Porfolio, because it's a good mix of hard business and soft business. The most interesting piece in their March 2008 issue is "How Stars Are Born At Art Basel" by Alexandra Peers. It follows how certain artists' work—even whole genres—experience price spikes thanks to the interest shown in them by a small cabal of buyers with eclectic tastes. These include Tobey Maguire, hotel art buyers and Ranbir Singh, a New York collector who owns a giant Dolly Parton by Andy Warhol and focuses on Indian art. I was also interested to learn that a 1924 print of Edward Steichen's famous portrait of Gloria Swanson sold for $500,000 recently. It was really, really ready for its closeup.

Body Of Work

Shuttermag4_2I love John Andresen's photography of strapping European youngsters, many of them barely-legal ballet dancers and athletes—some even pros. He's got a great calendar, he publishes a magazine called Shutter (or "shudder!") that is reminiscent of the old Physique Pictorial-type mags and he just shot skier Ragnar Bragvin:

And I also like his other guys, some of whom are after the jump...

A Little Bit Country

Sc0000d4bf

Sc0000de23I'd say No Country For Old Men is the odds-on favorite to win the top honor at the Oscars tonight. It wasn't my favorite, but it's a fine film and worse have won. It's still possible There Will Be Blood will cancel it out and Juno will sneak in. I loved these illustrations—by Zohar Lazar for Russian GQ (February 2008)—so thought I'd put them up as a pre-congratulatory homage, even if I'm seriously hoping There Will Be Blood prevails.

All of my Oscar predictions after the jump...

Good Golly, Miss Molly

Sc00041f5fFace of the decade?

There's an interesting story called "From MySpace To Dave's Place..." in the new BlackBook (February 2008) about Molly Gottschalk, a girl with a cool MySpace who was plucked from obscurity by David LaChapelle to win a photo shoot with him. The shooter became so enamored with the unusual-looking girl he made her into his new muse. Keeping in mind he finds Amanda Lepore interesting and striking, this could be taken as an insult.

Big Brothers

This filthy-but-funny video is why The Onion is brilliant:

Use Of 'N-Word' May End Porn Star's Career

Thanks to Gordon for pointing it out.

Big_brother_crazy_james_gayTalk about forming an alliance!

In more serious (well...at least it's real!) porn news, Crazy James from CBS's (deliberately sexed-up) new Big Brother installment apparently did more than just solo gay videos...he went all the way.
