Elizabeth Edwards has died. She seemed like a great lady. While I was critical of her decision to stay mum after knowing her husband had a major scandal incubating even though he was running for prez, I also found her to be the brains of that operation.

I loved that she ran up and reminded Dick Cheney—after his debate with her husband, in which he'd smugly observed that he'd never even met Edwards—that he had in fact met the senator on more than one occasion.

And I loved when she said that her husband knew better on gay marriage, chiding him publicly on it.

Dick Cheney, who looks unlikely to outlive Nancy Reagan judging by recent photos, will be charged in Nigeria over a Halliburton bribery case. Sure, he's charged in Africa but remains uncharged here, where he did much worse stuff.

Wait, I thought President Obama was supposed to be so weak on fighting terrorism...? If so, why have we killed or arrested so many al-Qaeda and Taliban figures in the past year? Now that we have that bastard American terrorist in custody thanks to Pakistan, perhaps the president can look forward to praise from the daughter of the former vice president.

Oh, wait, I forgot—nobody fucking cares about the opinions of the daughter of the former vice president—who is considered too extreme even for the extremists on the American right. In my opinion, her crazy anti-government chatter is what aides and abets this kind of behavior. So who's the terrorism sympathizer?

I wonder how the right wing will react when we capture or kill Osama bin Laden, other than to scream that he'll probably be read Miranda rights?

FINALLY, the Obama Administration is pushing back against Dick Cheney's ridiculous assertions that Obama is soft on terror. In this and in many other regards, the Obama Administration has relied far too heavily on "oh, nobody will pay attention if the criticism isn't true." When patently false claims are made repeatedly, they eventually stick. Ask John Kerry. Joe Biden does a good job here. 

 

Now that he's not in or running for office, now that he's no longer working with the president who tried to have a Constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage as between one man and one woman, Dick Cheney is comfortable telling people that he is, in fact, okay with same-sex marriage, so long as it's decided by each state and not via federal mandate.

Those of us who are frustrated that President Obama still apparently feels unable to admit that he is in favor of gay marriage, instead claiming he prefers civil unions, can only be pleased with this development—along with making our voices heard via protests, letters (I sent my first White House missive ever this past week) and other means, we have a widening array of shame chits to use toward forcing Obama's hand. You know, like, "Ted Olson is more pro-gay rights than your stated position is...Dick Cheney is more pro-gay rights than your stated position is..."

Eventually, he'll either be embarrassed into admitting his ideas on the subject are evolving or he'll feel totally safe in admitting his ideas on the subject are evolving (as Bill Clinton feels now that neither he nor his wife are running for office...perhaps that was fair warning that Hillary was about to say the same thing). Either way, it'll happen.

As for those who hate Obama for being too reticent on the issue, I guess this gives them more of an axe to grind. But regardless, it only works in our favor.

This might be the most effective—and it's probably my favorite—Obama/Biden ad of the cycle. They pounce on Dick Cheney's kiss-of-death endorsement of McCain/Palin, using note-perfect music and the perfect announcer. "He's earned it," he says with humor, twisting the knife. This will air nationally on cable. I almost think Cheney did this on purpose...even dumb bunny Bush knows he's loathed and has disappeared down his rabbit hole, so don't tell me Cheney thinks his endorsement is anything but venomous. Maybe it really is true that nobody in Washington likes John McCain.
