Boy Culture Turns 5: My Favorite Posts Comments (23)

Img_0736As of midnight tonight, it will be exactly five years since my first post. It's hard to imagine it's been that long, and a lot's changed—the tone and subject matter are different, how often I post, my limits (no nudity in a couple of years due to ad constraints). I've devoted a crazy amount of time and money and energy to this blog for a very small financial return (you couldn't guess low enough), but it's always rewarding to have this forum with which to express myself, keep my writing ability fluid, perhaps influence a couple of people here and there, share obsessions with strangers (in both senses of the word) and learn new things.

6wzn3lxTake That's Howard...can you believe this happened onstage at a pop concert?

Here are some of the posts that were most important to Boy Culture's history. For the uninitiated, some of the oldest ones refer to Boy Culture, the movie made of my novel; I started the blog at the time Boy Culture was being filmed as a way to keep people informed of the progress...and it all snowballed from there.

Some of these posts are milestones when it comes to the hits they provided but most are filled with original writing and/or photography and video and are just the posts of which I'm proudest. I hope you'll take some time to click on them and send their links around to others—and some time is what you'll need...

The Sensitive Crowd Comments (4)

Amd_against_mosqueBigotry hiding behind sensitivity

Big protest at the site of Park51, the "Ground Zero mosque" that isn't at Ground Zero and isn't primarily a mosque, 1,000 against and 200 for.

Amd_for_mosque Among those against, a sign that read, "Obama, your middle-name is Hussain, we understand. Bloomberg, what's your excuse." [A few sics required there.]

Anyone who would see that sign and stand with it is a bigot. It's not about being sensitive to 9/11 families and it's not because Ground Zero is hallowed (just wait until that hallowed new building goes up filled with tons of businesses not signed off on by the families), it's because most people in this country believe that Islam = terrorism. Some of them at least admit it.

Ironic touch: Protesters against the mosque blared "Born in the USA." Still too dumb after all these years to know the meaning of Bruce Springsteen's song.

UPDATE: Even "the most conservative man in Congress," Ron Paul, is on the side of Park51, stating:

"If Islam is further discredited by making the building of the mosque the issue, then the false justification for our wars in the Middle East will continue to be acceptable."

From The President's Point Of View Comments (0)

President Obama will tape an appearance on The View Wednesday that will air Thursday—the first time a sitting U.S. president has appeared on a daytime talk show. Kudos to Barbara Walters for this big get; Walters will be returning for the first time since her heart surgery for this episode.

This is going to be a huge deal. Not only will Obama have to be on his toes for whatever right-wing bullshit Elisabeth Hasselbeck will spring on him in order to score points with her base, he'll also have pointed, I would assume, questions from the left's Joy Behar. After all, things have changed since his 2008 appearance as a candidate.

I wonder which will bring up Don't Ask, Don't Tell or gay issues in general—the left-leaning crew, out of genuine interest, or Hasselbeck, out of a desire to stick a salty finger in the wound between the president and gay activists?

He's got a lot of other stuff to be grilled about, too—BP, the economy, Afghanistan and Iraq, fluffy stuff, the upcoming elections, Shirley Sherrod. Hope he takes it as seriously as one last Hillary Clinton debate.

Social Insecurity Comments (10)

John Boehner goes on the record stating that Social Security should be phased out and the retirement age raised to 70. This is the kind of pro-business, anti-people crap all Republicans believe in because they have theirs so why would they stop to let anyone else get anything? Ending Social Security would turn our world upside down and be devastating—irreparably—for our country. And for what...the wars? Fuck the wars, I'd rather abandon the wars than our own citizens.

Gutless Comments (2)
Those who erected this sign "support the troops" in Greenville, Alabama...support the troops spilling their guts to allow the sign-erectors to invoke God and play with guns. When is the next Civil War again?

The Trig Option Comments (3)

In Touch (January 25, 2010) goes all in with the anti-choice crowd, doing an original photo shoot with Sarah Palin (classy!) and her daughter Bristol and allowing them to scream, "We're glad we chose life" on the cover of the 'bloid. Remember when Republicans thought single motherhood was deplorable? Now, as  long as you ARE a Republican, it's downright godly.

Factoring in Levi Johnston's credible-sounding comments that Sarah Palin didn't do much of the actual mothering for Trig, it makes sense that she'd deem herself a "more patient" mother. It's easy to be patient when your daughter is taking care of the kid. Speaking of her daughters, Bristol now says, "I'm not going to have sex until I'm married. I can guarantee it." I wouldn't bet on that.

Also, can we please come to the conclusion that the Palins can no longer hide behind "leave my kids out of it"? You're deliberately making them a focal point of who you are.

UPDATE: She seems to have insisted on using her own strictly partisan photographer. Kudos for zero (?) retouching, but dig that tacky, unprofessional backdrop:

SafariScreenSnapz001 10-28-41 Meanwhile, Palin on FOX admits she thought Iraq was behind 9/11...and she thought this not in September of 2001, but immediately before being chosen as her party's nominee for Vice President in 2008. Complete idiot. Thanks, John McCain, for making this moron such a powerful name and a potential future president.

Abort The Troops Comments (2)

Even the FOX News anchor can't agree with Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, who flippantly states that if it turns out the American soldier currently held by the Taliban deserted, the Taliban could do us a big favor by...well, killing him, of course. Says a lot about the, er, tilt of the network when this is their expert they're interviewing on how to rescue the captured solider.

Whatever happened to "support the troops?"

Our Partners In Crime Comments (1)

When I read stories like this one, about how the Iraqi Militia are murdering gay men by applying a surgical-grade glue to their anuses and then inducing lethal diarrhea, I just can't understand how anyone would believe that people are basically good, or that God exists.

Less broadly, as Joe says, aren't we running that fucking country?
