I'm not a hard-news site, even if I'm bright and have opinions on many topics. But just waking up (in L.A., amid autoposts of other topics on my blog today through Sunday) to the Boston news, I felt I had to chime in and just say how horrifying it is for Boston and this country and the civilized world that a pair of young men who, by most accounts, seem to have been good, regular kids for a long time, could radicalize and decide it would be a good idea to kill people at a marathon.

The interview with their uncle is powerful. "Losers" who "don't deserve to live on this earth." His message of sorrow to the victims is memorable.

I hope the second brother is captured or killed very soon and that we can begin to figure out how the hell they changed, and together.

I will say, though, that I wish there were some way to put the genie back in the bottle regarding how news events are researched and reported and commented on within the social media. There is a beauty to free expression and participation, but there is also a devastating shrapnel of misinformation, compelling-sounding lies and false leads, and seemingly spontaneously generated mythologies that arise so quickly.

I just want to know the facts, I don't want to read about (phony) Twitter accounts and other nonsense,and risk becoming an unwitting messenger of bullshit. I want a glimpse into their minds so we can try, somehow, to figure out a sensible way to keep people like this from developing their twisted plans.

I scoffed at this story of three U.A.E. men kicked out of an event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for being too handsome and therefore a potential distraction/moral challenge for women, and yet as recently as last week I was advocating for the trashing of three boxes of sickeningly good chocolates from my work kitchen lest I eat twice my weight in them.

So maybe the Saudis are on to something here.

A British man is verbally harassed by anti-gay Muslims proclaiming him to be walking in "a Muslim area," where he clearly should not be looking like a homo.

How about: You're Muslim and you're in England, go back to the Middle East? Doesn't sound good in that direction either, "mate."

It's insane to think that fundamentalists are resorting to this, to policing their turf in a country where they're not even the majority. Makes no kind of sense.

Sunando Sen, murdered for being brown

Erika Menendez, 31, the woman police sought in the death of a man pushed in front of an oncoming subway this week in New York, has been apprehended and charged with murder as a hate crime.

Why a hate crime? Because, as she told cops:

"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up."

She'd never met the man or exchanged a word with him, yet decided he deserved to die because he may (or may not) have practiced the same religion as the people who destroyed the World Trade Center 11 years ago. Oh, and Hindus are the same as Muslims.

Insane. She sees a Muslim and blah-blah-blah, 9/11...she's the Rudy Giuliani of murderesses.

Oh, and I have to ask: I wonder if this has any connection to those virulently anti-Muslim ads right-wingers have fought to put up in subways? Even if not, they'll be ominous viewing from now on.
