On Monday of this week, I attended a special screening of Sofia Coppola's Somewhere at the Crosby Street Hotel. The film was preceded by a cocktail party and was introduced by its unlikely star. I say "unlikely" because the talented Stephen Dorff is perhaps more closely associated with action films like Blade than with contemplative character studies like Somewhere, but if he's the picture's unlikely star he's also the picture's unlikely savior, turning in a beautifully subtle performance that so far has been ignored by year-end awards committees.
